Credit unions were established with the philosophy of people helping people, to serve the financially underserved. On May 15, 1935, at 4:15 in the afternoon, a group of seven educators met at the Central Office of Granite School District to organize a credit union for the teachers within the school district. These fellow educators pooled their money together to form a cooperative to provide solutions to help them achieve their financial dreams and goals.
At first, the credit union operated primarily out of the president’s home. As the credit union expanded to serve a larger field of membership, it changed its name three times and received a federal charter on July 26, 2004. Now, Granite Credit Union serves 10 counties in Utah: Salt Lake, Box Elder, Weber, Morgan, Davis, Summit, Tooele, Utah, Wasatch, and Juab counties.
